Can granulated cork be used as a dirt substitute in stage productions?Updated 6 days ago

We work with many production companies in film and theater, and our cork is often used in set design and special effects. It’s a great option as a dirt or sand substitute—lightweight, low-dust (depending on the grain size), and easy to clean up.

That said, there are a few things to keep in mind when using it on stage. Depending on the grain and the movement in your production, the cork may bounce or scatter under heavy foot traffic, so a shallow border can help contain it. It’s generally safe underfoot, but traction can vary based on the cork grain and the subfloor beneath it—testing it with the intended footwear and surface is a good idea. Cork also has mild sound-dampening qualities, which can slightly muffle footsteps—this may be a plus or something to consider depending on the needs of your scene.
